Why Instructional Design?

I fell into the field accidentally, as a scriptwriter — the single job posting I’ve ever seen, to date, that wanted Creative Writing majors! — but it turns out that instructional design is a great match. I love learning new things, I’m great at clarifying content, I’m a writer, and interactivity fascinates me.

What Kind of Experience Do You Have?

Healthcare, HR, energy, financial, and more, from highly technical training for engineers to cultural awareness simulation games to mobile EMT certification courses. In this field, you need the ability to be interested in everything. I’ve worked as a military contractor, an oil and gas employee, and a freelancer. All told, I’m building on five years of experience.

I have a graduate certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin-Stout’s program. I also have a Master’s degree. You can see more on my Linkedin profile.

What Else Do You Do?

I’m living in the glorious city of New Orleans. I like travel, and nature, and art. I also keep up with developments in the game design world. It’s a thrilling place these days, and a lot of what they’re doing is directly applicable to learning experience design.

Why “Daedal Works”?

Daedalus was the inventor of the labyrinth in Greek mythology. I love the idea of taking complicated material and making it a puzzle — guiding the learner where appropriate, but ultimately giving them the satisfaction of mastering the solution for themselves.
